Tollini Vineyard, Redwood Valley, Mendocino
With ocean breezes moderating the summer temperatures, the growing season in Redwood Valley is noticeably longer than other inland AVAs. Grapes are able to ripen slowly, resulting in wines that have an exceptional balance of tannins, acidity, alcohol and fruit flavors. The terrain is defined by its elevation and distinctive soils, which tend to be very red in color and consist of alluvial loam and gravel. This vineyard is owned by our friend, Alvin Tollini, and is filled with 80-year-old vines, all head trained and certified organic.
Here is an honest expression of Northern Italy’s Barbera in California. Intense, yet precise, aromas of dried cherry, cacao, and eucalyptus perfume the glass – inviting a wine that is both complex and restrained. This is a focused Barbera with bright acidity and enticing red fruit that begins with verve yet continues to lengthen and develop its fine tannins with every sip. Think of dark chocolate covered cherries, hibiscus, fresh fig, Kalamata olive, and fennel. This wine should be enjoyed with Mediterranean or classic Italian fare, cured meats of any kind, and firm hearty cheeses. Enjoy Thanksgiving 2019 – 2022.
